General Information

Why? "Adopt-a-Highway"

Down and dirty statistics tell the story. In 1996, more than 6,600 volunteers went into the ditches and collected tonnes of clutter, which then went to landfills instead of remaining on our roadsides - a worthwhile job well done.

Now, under Adopt-a-Highway, your group can contact for a three-year "stewardship" of your selected stretch of road, with public recognition for all your hard work.

New groups must complete the Adopt-a-Highway Form and send to:

Tel: 506.452.1339
Toll Free: 1.866.405.7000
Fax: 506.452.7950

Over and above improving our roadsides, the clean-up and the signs will help educate the public, and that means reducing future litter.

Who?

Individuals, non-profit organizations, service clubs and businesses may apply to take responsibility for a stretch of highway.

The first step is to read the guidelines carefully, then select a stretch of highway you feel can be cleaned effectively by your group, and file an application with CFANB.

Each sponsor needs an Authorized Group Representative and an Alternate to serve as contacts with CFANB and the Department of Transportation or Maritime Road Development Corporation.

ALERT! Applications are handled on a "first-come, first-served" basis. So file your application now!

Where?

Almost any stretch of highway outside municipal limits may be adopted. Some special stretches of by-passes and major arterial highways inside municipalities may also be available.

Minimum lengths for adoption are five kilometres in rural areas and three kilometres in urban areas, with actual lengths tailored to the size of the adopting group.

When?

Actual clean-up activities take place twice a year.
  • Spring - April 15 to June 30.
  • Fall - September 1 to October 31.
Official signs are installed by the Department of Transportation, displaying "Adopt-a-Highway / Adoptez-Une-Route", the name of the adopting group, the length of highway being cleaned, and the familiar New Brunswick "word-mark." No other logos are permitted.
